Why You Should Never Follow The Crowd

-- And be true to your own voice in the blogging community --

Do you like the picture? It was taken in South Bank and I wanted it to represent making a mark on something, and then I had this blog post idea and it just fitted. Anyway, I was having a little think to myself, as you do, after I published my last post while on Bloglovin' and it just made me think about how a blogger becomes popular. Is it because they blend in with everyone else with their clean minimal designs and predictable 'How To' posts that we've probably read from 10 other bloggers. Or is it because they want to stand out, and they do, and they use their own voice and the power of their blog to tell their readers what THEY want to put.

I'm not the perfect blogger, I don't have amazing photos and hey, sometimes I blog about things I'm interested in and others aren't. Last year when I was only just beginning to blog, I would look at loads of blogs and see what was popular. Sure that's good, but then you suddenly get so many posts along the same lines and it can get boring. I've realised that, and I've stopped trying to do 'How To' posts, but when I do, I try to make it fun and not repetitive. (I hope) I've added a photography series, a book series, and more.

And it comes to you my readers. It's like in real life, we're told to be ourselves, to stand out and be true to our own personality. I think that's really important, and so the same can go for blogging. It's hard in blogging, I feel, when others want to see posts that are popular and you're trying to do something different. So I want to say this, use your unique personality in your writing, make that mascara review your own and engage the reader with witty sentences that make them come back for more. I'm really not saying you're crap, you could have an amazing successful blog, but maybe some of you haven't found your niche yet. One of my favourite bloggers ever, Zoe London, is one of those who just stand out, she doesn't follow the crowd and blogs whatever she wants to. And that's why I love her for it.

All I really want to say is, be who you are comfortable with, in real life and online and never try to fit into the mould of something people are so used to seeing. If you're unique (I've said that so many times) then who knows where you could end up. Because you're something new and fresh, and people actually want to see more of you. I think I'm finally starting to realise that...

What's your opinion on this subject?

  2. Such good advice. I think I've learned from blogging a while that actually writing about what you love rather than what you think people might like is the best thing! x
