How To Be Popular

-- Is it really worth the hype? --

I'm betting 200 pugs that you've heard the words 'tumblr famous' and 'insta famous'. Basically, every app name along with the word 'famous'. I know a majority of people on here create a space on the internet to express themselves in a different way rather than purely to get a lot of views/followers. But I feel now that there's a lot of posts circulating the internet with titles like 'How to gain followers quickly!' and 'Why you should aim to get more views'. It's just crap, and working on a blog or account just to gain higher statistics sucks the personality out of whatever you're doing. Like a Dementor sucking out your soul.

And when you reach that level that people deem 'popular', all you get is spam comments and less of the genuine ones. You know what I mean: 'Check out my blog here!' and it's nothing to do with the post at hand. Of course I'm not knocking the whole popularity thing. Good on those who just so happen to have 10,000 followers and are loving it - you deserve it and I couldn't be happier. But what I don't like, is when people compare themselves to those who are lucky to have such a big community surrounding them. I mean, heck, I was one of those when I started - I compared myself to even smaller bloggers who had 100 more followers than me! But it's not a healthy way to think and soon enough you won't enjoy having your blog.

I do miss the days that I wasn't part of - that a lot of bloggers talk about - like when everyone was doing it for themselves and not to want to earn money or be recognized by loads. I really should think that there should be more posts about 'How to be yourself!'. Without copying what everyone else seems to be doing. (Which actually just doesn't get you noticed) For example, you could make your theme stand out by jiggling with some HTML and CSS. Work on how you want to present your photos and edit them. And most importantly, stick to your key interests and not write about what everyone else is writing about. It's pretty boring to see a lot of repeats of the same subject but in different ways - though I'm probably contradicting myself on that here.

Who doesn't want to be popular though? The secret to this is not trying to gain followers in a certain amount of time or reach statistic goals, it's just being yourself, showing personality in posts, being consistent in publishing and soon readers will want to come back. It's better to have few loyal readers who consistently comment than hundreds and thousands that you can't reply to. To be honest, that sounds pretty stressful haha - and it's not all rainbows and free things y'know.

  5. This is such an interesting topic! I think with so many blogs and youtube channels around, it's really easy to fall into the numbers game and get caught up in mechanically posting what is popular and safe. It's always sad to see an internet space with a lack of personality as I've always thought personality is what makes these spaces so great (and interesting and fun!)

  6. Thank you! I used to feel the same, the want to have a lot of followers, and it really put a damper on the way i posted for a while, so i took a break and came back after having a few months to clear my mind and reflect. It really helps. Now i'm back to blogging and loving it. I wish many other bloggers realize that popularity is not the goal for blogging, but enjoying what you post and being able to make new friends and talk to new people, that's the fun part!

Sorry, i went on a whole ramble there haha, awesome post!

  7. Oh my gosh YES YES YES! That was basically me screaming at the screen aha :P The part about all the posts re "how to gain followers", couldn't agree more - i actually wrote a post last month on "9 satirical ways to win followers" as i was a bit fed up with it all - sarcasm was my outlet! Also completely second your list of the originality girls :) THANK YOU for writing this!
