5 Ways To Make Someone Smile Today

Be a happy elf for a day

My favourite ever quote from Elf is: "The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear." Which is the most truest thing I ever heard. And even when it's not the season for being jolly, it should be something that's happening all year round. I'm obviously not saying everyone is moody, but it's important to feel good about ourselves and equally important to make someone else feel good.

And that's why it occurred to me to write this post. (Or type if you want to get technical) It can make us feel great that we're making others feel great. And then it does goes on round in a happy circle.  What's better? I ask with a triumphant face. Also let's ignore the fact that I kind of repeated myself there. Here's a few things you can do to make a difference to someone's day...

001: Treat them to a coffee: In the morning, at lunch or on the way home. It doesn't matter! If someone has a big day ahead, wants a pep or is purely craving caffeine, why not give them a drink on the house? Obviously if they like tea, give them tea.

002: Send a letter or text of appreciation: It doesn't have to be for a particular reason, but something to acknowledge that you appreciate that a loved one is there. It'll be a nice surprise and lets them feel that they're cared about. Of course, if you let them know every day in waking life then that's amazing!

003: Give them a compliment: A compliment can make someone feel on top of the world. Does their new coat look flattering on them? Is their makeup on point? Let them know! Though if you've never really done that sort of thing for someone, it could be awkward. But I'll be hoping that you'll be returned with thanks and love.

004: Leave some treats on their desk or the staff table: Are you a snazzy baker or a sucker for sweet treats? Why not share your passion by leaving a few bits for others? Bring in some spare bakes and everyone will love you even more. Anything with sugar or chocolate will make someone happy.

005: Validate their work or effort: If someone's done something well, or their epic skills for a hobby or talent needs to be brought to attention, then let them know! If they know, it will give them a pep in their step and have motivation to work harder or want to do it more. And it feels good. Plus you'll feel equally validated that they appreciate your acknowledgement.
