The Alibi Book Club #7

-- Haven't even got halfway and I feel like
I need to share this book with you guys --

Can we just take a few moments to reflect upon this book? Now I didn't really get the BBC adaption and I thought it was really slow going, but when you pick up this block of a book - It has 1003 pages - it feels quite relaxed. It's also quite slow going but it's a different experience reading the book. You can just sail through with no confusion and there's always a different chapter to read so you don't get easily bored. I've read 300 pages in a week and I'm still steaming along.

In summary...

"Two magicians shall appear in England. The first shall fear me; the second shall long to behold me The year is 1806. England is beleaguered by the long war with Napoleon, and centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation's past. But scholars of this glorious history discover that one remains: the reclusive Mr Norrell whose displays of magic send a thrill through the country. Proceeding to London, he raises a beautiful woman from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French. Yet the cautious, fussy Norrell is challenged by the emergence of another magician: the brilliant novice Jonathan Strange. Young, handsome and daring, Strange is the very opposite of Norrell. So begins a dangerous battle between these two great men which overwhelms the one between England and France. And their own obsessions and secret dabblings with the dark arts are going to cause more trouble than they can imagine."

I actually picked up this book last week because of Jennie as she did a review on it. It's quite different from what I usually read but because I love the likes of Harry Potter and BBC series Merlin and Atlantis, I gave it a shot. If you do like this sort of thing, I 100% recommend it!

Would you guys give this a read?

  4. Such a great book to get totally lost in for a little while! It definitely lost its pace a little for me in the middle, but I really enjoyed it. The BBC adaptation was fun too, think they did a great job :) x
